Cyanide Studios' 2006 World War II first-person shooter, Call of Duty: United Offensive, brought a sequel to the series with Call of Duty 2. Released in October 2005, the game set new memorials in storytelling and was released for Windows and OS X. The game's story concerns a young Marine fighting in the European Theater from 1944 through 1945. The player controls Private First Class John Davis of the U.S. First Infantry Division 6th Armored Battalion, part of the Battle of the Bulge offensive. Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty 3 was released on November 7, 2006, for Windows and became available on Steam on April 4, 2007. It is being developed by Treyarch with assistance from Raven Software. The game continues the series' World War II focus and is set in 1944 during Operation Overlord. The game takes the player through five campaigns: American, British, Canadian, French and German. It features new weapons (such as the Gewehr 43 rifle) and vehicles (such as tanks), new multiplayer modes (such as Axis vs. Allies matches), and a new engine. On January 24, 2007, Vivendi announced that it would be restructuring the companies under the Vivendi Games Mobile label. Sierra Entertainment and its parent company VU Games became Vivendi Games Mobile on March 3 with two divisions: Sierra and Activision. On March 4, Activision announced a deal with Valve Corporation to develop games for Steam including Call of Duty titles. Digital distribution of Call of Duty titles on Steam began with "" on August 28, 2007. To date, each title has been added as a separate purchase option or as part of a bundle from those available from within the Steam client application itself rather than as individual downloads from the service's website as with most non-Valve applications. Steamworks would later be used for the multiplayer modes of Call of Duty: World at War. In March 2007, Activision announced that Infinity Ward was working on a new title in the Call of Duty franchise titled "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare", which would completely overhaul all aspects of the game including its engines, gameplay, and cut scenes. It began development in late 2005 and was finished on November 6, 2007. The game was released on November 10, 2007, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows. Infinity Ward has since created three follow-ups in the series including "", "" and "". On July 21, 2007, Activision announced plans for a remake of the original game. The "Remaster" saw no major changes to gameplay or graphics but included all of the same maps and game modes as well as updated lighting to make modern versions of the game look more like its original release (albeit with less detail).
